At the head of Loch Carron with Applecross to the north and kintail to the south, Strathcarron is surrounded by unspoilt beauty

Strathcarron is a small hamlet situated at the head of Loch Carron in Wester Ross. To the north lies the scenic Applecross peninsula, and to the south, the road leads to Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye beyond. At this crossroads, many visitors to the area pass through Strathcarron on their journey through Wester Ross.

Strathcarron was historically a crofting village, and this is evident in the pretty stone cottages scattered through the hamlet. Don’t miss a visit to Ardaneaskan Croft Museum, found at the end of a single track road that runs along the northern shore of Loch Carron. From the outside this looks like a dilapidated stone bothy, but inside it is packed with artefacts of a traditional crofting lifestyle, including agricultural machinery and a rowing boat. This hidden gem is well worth venturing off the beaten path to find!

On your way down the northern shore of Loch Carron, you come across the ruins of Strome Castle, set on a fantastically picturesque location looking down the loch. The access to the castle is poor and requires deviating from the path a little – but this just adds to the adventure of discovering the ruin.

To the west, the road to Applecross climbs up the famous Bealach na Ba – ‘the cattle herder’s road’ – a series of hairpin bends up a steep hillside. This section of road attracts many visitors just looking to drive the famous mountain pass, although on the other side, the village of Applecross has mouthwatering seafood, stunning views and cultural and heritage attractions. Ad you return, be sure to stop by the café and gallery at Tornapress or the seafood bar at Kishorn.

Just a few miles south of Strathcarron, Attadale Gardens are full of native and exotic species and pretty features including a Monet bridge, fern gardens and waterfalls – and of course a café!

To the south is Eilean Donan Castle which sits on the banks of Loch Duich. The view to this picturesque ruin is one of Scotland’s most iconic views, and is certainly one that you’ll recognise from postcards!

There is a small craft village just to the south of the village, including a weavers and a pottery – this is well worth a stop to get yourself a unique souvenir of your trip.

Strathcarron is often passed through as people travel to and between the more well-trodden destinations of Applecross and Skye. There are, however, interesting historical and cultural discoveries to be made in the area, as well as some delicious fresh seafood and locally-made crafts.
