Before the Skye bridge was built in 1992, a ferry linked Kyle of Lochalsh with Kyleakin on Skye

Kyle of Lochalsh sits at the ‘gateway to Skye’, on the mainland side of the Skye Bridge on the bank of Loch Alsh. The surrounding area is dotted with picturesque lochs, hills and castles, and in under half an hour in either direction you can reach two of Scotland’s finest mountain ranges.

The area’s most famous attraction is certainly Eilean Donan Castle, perched on the banks of Loch Duich. Stunningly picturesque, the castle is instantly recognisable from many photographs and postcards that you will spot throughout the country. It is by no means the only castle in the area though, as there are many more on Skye to discover.

A trip over to Skye is unmissable if you’re staying here, whether you’re wanting to summit the majestic Cuillin mountains, try a dram of Talisker, discover dinosaur footprints or even use it as a stepping stone to the Outer Hebrides. Up the coast from Kyle of Lochalsh is Plockton, a pretty village perched on the shores of a sheltered bay overlooking Loch Carron. The village is known as ‘the jewel of the Highlands’ and for good reason – it is stunningly picturesque and has a range of outdoor activities, shops and local attractions. From here you can kayak the crystal clear west coast waters, try your hand at sailing or just enjoy a wildlife cruise – keep an eye out for dolphins!

In Kyle of Lochalsh, you’re halfway between two of Scotland’s finest mountain ranges – Skye’s Cuillins to the west and the five sisters of Kintail to the east. Both offer unrivalled mountaineering with spectacular views of jagged peaks and ridgelines. If you’re not fully confident in the hills, do make use of the many mountaineering guides available who will help you push your limits and explore these mountains safely.

The village of Kyle of Lochalsh itself benefits from a coop as well as a butchers and a woollens shop. We would also recommend a trip down the coast to Dornie where you’ll find an art gallery and gift shop, a deli and pub grub.

With access to spectacular mountains, historic castles, pretty villages and of course the Isle of Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore both Skye and the adjacent mainland.
