Fort William - The outdoor capital of the UK and home to the UK's Highest mountain

Fort William is known as ‘Scotland’s Outdoor Capital’, and for good reason. Nestled in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Fort William gives access to world-class mountaineering, snowsports, mountain biking and more. As you drive here from the south through Glencoe, the scenery is second to none – endless mountains and glens really sets the scene for your arrival!

The town marks the northern end of the West Highland Way and the start of the Great Glen Way, two of Scotland’s most famous long-distance routes. Many walkers are therefore likely to end up in Fort William one way or another! The town has a good range of shops, including outdoor outlets, and so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to re-stock, re-charge and fill up on some food here!

Of course, one of Fort William’s main attractions is the chance to ‘bag’ Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis. The ‘tourist track’ is extremely popular and so if you’re looking for a more ‘wild’ climb, we recommend looking into the alternative routes up – as long as you have the skills, experience and equipment for it, of course! If you’re not confident, there were plenty of mountain guides in the area who can help you conquer this magnificent peak. And if you’re into mountaineering, don’t miss the annual Fort William Mountain Festival!

If you would rather admire the mountain from afar than hike up, a 4-mile walk or drive along to Corpach gives you spectacular views across the water. A visit at sunset, or as the early morning mist hangs over the water, gives you unparalleled views of the mountain. Here you can also admire Neptune’s Staircase, a series of locks in the Caledonian Canal.

Fort William is also home to world-class mountain biking races, hosting the World Cup and other events throughout the year.

If you’re partial to a wee dram, or want your first taste of Scotland’s ‘uisge beatha’, a visit to the Distillery is not to be missed. Take a tour to see how Scotland’s famous spirit is made, try it for yourself and get yourself a bottle to take home.

If you’re interested in history, don’t miss Inverlochy Castle – a ruined medieval fortress with a gruesome past including two battles. The castle is now a ruin, and is unusual in that it has remained unaltered since it was built in the 13th century.
