Fort Augustus - a popular tourist destination tucked away in the heart of the Great Glen

Located at the southern end of Loch Ness in the Great Glen, this historic village is a popular tourist destination and stop-off point for those traversing the Great Glen Way.

The Caledonian Canal runs 60 miles from Inverness on the east coast to Corpach on the west and includes the Great Glen lochs of Loch Ness, Oich, Lochy and Dochfour. Fort Augustus sits on this canal and for that reason is a favourite for transport enthusiasts, with its Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre, locks and boat trips out onto Loch Ness itself.

For anyone interested in history, the Clansmen Centre and surrounding General Wade’s military roads give an insight into the area’s past including clan life and the Jacobite Uprisings.

There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area including walking, golf, mountain biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting and more.

Loch Garry, to the south of Fort Augustus, is a much-photographed sight from a hillside vantage point due to its uncanny resemblance to a map of Scotland!

12 miles north of Fort Augustus lies the Dundreggan Estate, owned by Highland charity Trees for Life who have undertaken restoration of the woodland in the area. They welcome visitors to explore the woodland paths and visit their nursery. For anyone wanting to get involved, they welcome volunteers for conservation days and weeks, to learn horticulture, tree planting and ecological restoration skills.
