Urquart Castle, on the banks of Loch Ness, changed hands throughout the Jacobite Uprisings and Wars of Scottish Independence

Drumnadrochit, on the northern banks of Loch Ness, affords stunning views down Scotland’s most famous loch as well as access to outdoor activities and some spectacular glens. Just 15 miles from Inverness, it is also easily accessible for those not wanting to travel far from transport links and shops.

One of the best views of the loch also doubles as a fascinating and impressive historical site – Urquhart Castle. The ruins sit perched on a slight headland in the loch, dates back as far as the 13th century. A short film shown in the visitor centre before you enter the castle explains the castle’s turbulent past, setting the scene for your visit. Although ruined, Historic Environment Scotland have restored the site well enough to allow you to limb up towers and explore the inside of the building.

There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area, including horse riding and walking. Nearby Aigas Field Centre is great for anyone wanting to dive a little deeper and learn about the wildlife and landscape in the Highlands – including wildcats, pine martens and otters all found in the area.

A half-hour drive to the west takes you to the head of Glen Affric – considered by many to be one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens. Be prepared for the winding, single track road to access it – but its seclusion means that despite its closeness to Inverness, relatively few people make the journey. The landscape is spectacular and feels truly wild.

With spectacular views and immediate access to walks and outdoor activities, yet within easy reach of Inverness, Drumnadrochit is a great balance of Highland scenery and convenience. And – who knows – you might just spot a mysterious shape lurking in the loch!
