It was in Dornoch that the last 'witch', Janet Horne, was burned in Scotland, in 1727. The 'witches stone' in the town commemorates her death

Dornoch is a mecca for golfers but it has so much more to offer too, from a huge sandy beach to a magnificent cathedral, abundant shops and cafes and a spectacular nature reserve – full of seals! It is within easy reach of Inverness for transport links.

Attracting golfers from worldwide, Dornoch’s golf course is on the bucket list for many – and is even listed in the top 10 golf courses in the world! We needn’t say more for golfers – but if you’re tagging along on your other half’s trip, or if you just want to get to know what else Dornoch has to offer, you won’t be disappointed.

Nature lovers shouldn’t miss Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve, just north of Dornoch. Birds, wildflowers, butterflies and other insects, otters, seals… Loch Fleet has them all! Osprey visit during the summer months and can be seen soaring overhead or diving for a fish. Seals haul out on the sea banks, and wildfowl feed in the water. And if you stay very still… you might spot an otter!

Back in the town, Dornoch Cathedral is a magnificent building. This 13th century church is spectacular inside, with particularly beautiful stained glass windows. Its bulky and relatively plain exterior hides spectacular arched ceilings, intricate woodwork and a carved pulpit within.

Dornoch is full of small, independent shops, cafes and museums – a full day can be spend wandering the town itself!

If you want to explore further afield there are plenty of low-grade walks along both the coast and further inland – we recommend a walk around Skelbo Forest, which is dotted with wooden sculptures to keep the kids entertained! There is also a pony trekking centre nearby.

Dornoch has plenty to offer those who want to stay in a picturesque highland town, enjoy sandy beaches and pleasant, easy-going walks – all within easy reach of Inverness.
