Colonsay and Oronsay are neighbouring islands north of Islay and Jura. Colonsay is the larger of the two with a population of around 135; Oronsay, accessible from Colonsay at low tide, is home so fewer than 10. Both are typical of the Inner Hebrides of featuring fertile plains, sandy beaches and abundant wildlife, both on land and in the sea.

The island communities are welcoming and lively, with numerous small business thriving on Colonsay including oyster farming, honey production, brewing and lobster fishing.

Wildlife is abundant, benefitting from the mild ocean climate and a relatively sparse population of people. Choughs and corncrakes are found on the island, which are protected by a Special Protection Area covering Oronsay and southern Colonsay. Grey seals congregate around Eilean nan Ròn (seal’s island). Basking sharks visit the waters in summer, and dolphins and whales can occasionally be seen passing by.

At the south of Colonsay is Hangman’s Rock, an outcrop at the top of a crag at the foot of Beinn Eibhne, said to have once been used as a public hanging place of condemned criminals.

Many spectacular beaches fringe the islands. Kiloran Beach is perhaps the most impressive of these – a mile-long expanse of golden sand, it is popular with surfers catching the Atlantic waves as they roll in.

On Oronsay, the remains of Oronsay Priory can be explored. This monastery dates back to at least 1353, dedicated to St Columba. The priory contains some impressive carved stones and is worth a visit.

Together, Colonsay and Oronsay make a peaceful island retreat for visitors wanting to get away from it all and experience life on the edge of the Atlantic. Wildlife and people thrive here, and although only small, the community is lively and will give visitors a warm welcome.
