Built in 1628, Braemar Castle has a clourful history as an important stronghold during the Jacobite uprisings. It is now managed and restored by the local community

Braemar is tucked away in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, surrounded by mountains, glens and Caledonian Pine forest and home to some of Scotland’s rarest wildlife. The Royal Family themselves have chosen the area as their Highland retreat and it’s easy to see why, as visitors to the area return year after year to enjoy the spectacular scenery and tranquil atmosphere.

The Cairngorms are a favourite for many of Scotland’s mountaineers. An extensive plateau, more similar to the Arctic tundra than anywhere else in Scotland, extends from Aviemore in the west to Braemar in the east. It is home to mountain hare, grouse, golden eagle, dotterel, ptarmigan, snow bunting and more. Just east of Braemar stands Lochnagar, a spectacular mountain very popular with walkers and climbers. Mountaineers with good navigation skills and experience in the mountains can venture onto the plateau itself and trek across some of Scotland’s highest mountains, emerging in Aviemore. An excellent route through the mountains is the Lairig Ghru, a 19-mile hill pass extending from Aviemore to Linn of Dee, 6 miles from Braemar. Glenshee Ski Centre is just 9 miles away for those looking for winter sports.

Those looking for a low-level adventure will be spoiled for choice too, with Caledonian pine forests and birch woods to explore, riverside walks once favoured by Queen Victoria, and crag-top walks taking in spectacular views of the mountains through tall pine trees.

If you’re looking for history you can visit Braemar Castle and explore the 17th century rooms of this fascinating defence, once used during the Jacobite uprising. The ruins of Kindrochit Castle are also popular. And of course, Balmoral Castle – the Highland home of the Royal Family – is high on the list for many visitors, and certain parts can be explored when the Royals are not in residence.

The Braemar Highland Gathering is one of the largest events in the Highland Games summer calendar. Pipers, caber tossers, dancers and more compete in this spectacular show of Scottish heritage. It is held annually on the first Saturday of September.
