Perched above Sands beach on the Applecross peninsula is a Mesolithic dwelling, inhabited 9,500 years ago. What a view they had!

Applecross is a favourite for many visitors to the west coast. A small fishing village tucked on the far side of the Bealach na Ba – an alpine-style road of hairpin bends and steep climbs – Applecross sits overlooking the sound of Raasay and Skye’s Cuillin ridge. Famous for its seafood, many make the journey just to visit the famous Applecross Inn.

The Bealach na Ba itself is one of the main draws to the area, being an iconic feature and many that one want to tick off the bucket list! The name means ‘pass of the cattle’, as it used to be used to herd cattle from Applecross to other Highland towns. Take great care, be aware of conditions such as snow and ice, be courteous to other drivers, take your time and enjoy the drive!

Applecross has a popular campsite and several B&Bs and an Inn. There is also a large hostel nearby that welcomes walkers.

Sand beach lies just north of the village and is backed by huge dunes – kids will love to run up and slide down these! The beach can be reached by a 2-mile footpath, or there is a good-sized car park.

Applecross Heritage Centre is small but well worth a visit. A small chapel nearby is small and understated yet an attractive and peaceful place to be. It is thought that Maelrubha, an influential Irish monk who came to Scotland and founded a monastery on the site of the current chapel, is buried in the grounds.

After putting your car through the winding journey up the Bealach and exploring the peninsula, you’ll be glad to know that although small, Applecross has its own fuel pump – fortunate, as the next station is 36 miles away!

Applecross may be small but many days can be spent here, taking in the scenery, eating good food and exploring all that the peninsula offers.
