Achiltibuie is the main settlement in Coigach, a remote and wild corner of the northwest Highlands, with panoramic mountain, sea and island views

Achiltibuie is perched on a small peninsula north of Ullapool, overlooking the Summer Isles and overlooked by the mighty Ben Mor Coigach. It lies at the northern reaches of the Wester Ross Biosphere, a UNESCO designation where the communities actively learn about their surroundings to create a better future for them and their environment. It is set apart from the NC500, accessible only by a 10-15 mile drive along twisting, turning single track road. The village is a scattered settlement with a post office, a shop a hostel and several B&Bs, so isn’t for anyone seeking tourist attractions – but if it’s absolute peace and spectacular views you’re after, Achiltibuie is for you.

The closest that many people come to the village is Stac Pollaidh, a small but spectacular mountain in Coigach. The unique, cragged ridge is just a 2-4 hour walk yet affords truly spectacular views to Cul Mor, Suilven and beyond. It’s very popular and the car park can get busy in summer.

For anyone looking for a quieter and more challenging walk, Ben Mor Coigach is less than 5 miles along the road. This 6-hour circular route takes in up to 4 peaks which surround a shallow valley. The walk gives excellent views south over the Summer Isles to the Dundonnel hills.

From Achilibuie, a small (12-seater) boat will take you out around the Summer Isles so you can spot wildlife and enjoy island scenery.

Don’t come to Achiltibuie expecting shops and entertainment, but do come expecting a peaceful settlement on the seashore with spectacular views and plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and take in some truly stunning scenery of Coigach and Assynt.
