Tomintoul - Known as the highest village in Scotland the village is on the Whisky Trail too

Tomintoul is a classic Highland town, featuring Victorian and Georgian architecture against a backdrop of pine forests. It lays claim to the title of ‘the Highlands’ highest town’ at 354m.

The town was developed in part to control cattle reiving and whisky smuggling in the area – both of which were a way of life for many years. Whisky is still important to the local economy to this day; Tomintoul sits in Speyside, an area known for its production of clean and crisp tasting whiskies. The famous Glenlivet is located just to the north of Tomintoul.

Located on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, the area offers abundant opportunities for outdoor activities including walking, horse riding and fishing, in addition to snowsports at the nearby Lecht Ski Centre, just 7 miles away. Tomintoul, as the closest settlement to the Lecht, is lively through the winter with skiers and snowboarders.

Tomintoul lies close to the Speyside Way long distance walking route, and was once on the route itself until it was diverted in 2000. However a path still connects Ballindalloch to the main route, and so walkers can go their own way and join the walk from Tomintoul if they wish.

A peaceful Cairngorms town, Tomintoul makes a lovely relaxing break or a base for walking, skiing or snowboarding.
