Arisaig & Mallaig

Arisaig and Mallaig sit between freshwater Loch Morar and the Atlantic shores, overlooking the Small Isles of Eigg, Rum and Muck. Arisaig’s pretty buildings and streets make it an attractive village, ad Mallaig serves as the gateway to many of the islands beyond. A string of beaches lines the shore between the two.

The largest of the beaches is Camusdarach, a large sandy beach backed by dunes and a beachside campsite. A coastal walk leads from here to Arisaig, taking in sandy bays and dunes. Take your time and enjoy the spectacular island views and abundant wildlife. You can even rent kayaks locally – and a guide if you need one – and explore this wonderful coastline from the seaward side!

If you’re a golfer, you’ll be hard pressed to find a course with better views than Traigh Golf Course, looking out over the sea to the distinctive skylines of the Small Isles.

From Mallaig, you can catch a ferry to the isles of Skye, Muck, Rum, Eigg, Canna or up Loch Nevis to Tarbet on the mainland.

At Arisaig, the Land, Sea and Islands Centre is a heritage, wildlife and visitor hub where you can find Scottish books, local crafts, displays showcasing the area and a wonderful view over Arisaig bay. An attractive church, St Marys, also stands in the village, tucked in the trees and looking out over the bay.

Inland, Loch Morar is Britain’s deepest loch at 310m. It’s even said to be home to its own monster – nicknamed ‘Morag’!

Arisaig and Mallaig are not just for passing through on your way to the islands – take some time to stop, explore and take in the wonderful coast and its views!
