Knoydart - The wild peninsula is sandwiched between two sea lochs, Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn

Knoydart is one of mainland Britain’s most remote areas, being accessible only by foot from inland or by ferry from Mallaig. There are no roads linking the peninsula with the rest of the mainland. It is this isolation alone that draws some to the area, but many are enticed by Knoydart’s magnificent mountains – made all the more attractive by the relatively few people who make it over.

There are few places on the British mainland that feel quite as remote and wild as Knoydart. 500 square kilometres of rugged mountains and rocky coast, containing 4 Munros and numerous Corbetts, walkers can roam for days and barely come across a sign of human life.

Yet where there are settlements on Knoydart, the community is thriving. You can find a community enterprise shop, a farm shop, local, wild venison, and a well-stocked food shop. Community events including ceilidhs, Burns suppers and conferences centre around the Community Hall. This peninsula may be cut off from the rest of the mainland, but there’s plenty going on!

Good food is very much at the heart of the Knoydart community and there are not only cafes and restaurants but a homemade ready meal ‘snack shack’ and a brewery. The local pub has been named the ‘remotest pub in mainland Britain’!

If climbing mountains isn’t your thing, you can also rent a bike, take a boat trip to see spectacular west coast marine life, charter a fishing boat, go pony trekking, take a woodworking course, take a woodland walk… we could go on!

Knoydart is proof that remote doesn’t have to mean lifeless. Mainland Britain’s most remote community is bustling with life, and their mountain landscapes are second to none.
