Bute is a fascinating island, inhabited since prehistoric times and the name possibly means 'fire'

A large island in the Firth of Clyde, Bute was once a popular Victorian seaside retreat and its history is still evident today in the palm-lined promenade of Rothesay, the island’s only town. It is still a popular holiday destination today for many from nearby towns and Glasgow. The island is famous for its varied landscape – fertile agriculture, healthland, rolling hills and sandy beaches can all be found.

The island is perhaps most famous for its gardens and grand architecture, another legacy of its Victorian heyday. Visitors are spoiled for choice, with Esplanade Gardens, Ardencraig Gardens (complete with aviary!), Ascog fernery and the gardens of Mount Stuart House to choose from. Mount Stuart itself is an incredibly grand sandstone mansion said to be the first home in Scotland to be lit by electricity.

Rothesay and neighbouring Port Bannatyne are lively settlements, with numerous shops, bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. There are local arts and crafts and local produce in Rothesay.

The island’s coasts and highest point, Windy Hill, all provide fantastic view of the mainland to the north, east and west and of mountainous Arran to the south. There are numerous inland and coastal walks to enjoy, ranging from low-grade strolls to a 13-mile circuit around the north of Bute.

Bute’s unusual claim to fame is that it has perhaps the country’s best public toilets! These Victorian-era loos are complete with decorative ceramic tiles, a mosaic floor and panelled doors. These were built to impress even in the Victorian era – so they’re definitely a cut above your average public loo today!

Bute is fortunate in that it has retained its prosperity as a seaside resort more so than many similar coastal towns. Its grand architecture, spectacular gardens and wonderful views draw people back for a classic seaside resort holiday.
