The clocks have changed and the Beltane bonfires built, so it seems like the right time to plan adventures for the summer. The Highlands have so much to offer it would be impossible to experience everything on one visit, but here are a selection from each of our True Highland areas to add to your to-do list.
The North Coast 500 route finally reaches the north east corner of mainland Scotland at John O’Groats. Be sure to take the obligatory photo at the famous sign, then head a whisker further east along the single track road to Duncansby Head. From the lighthouse it’s a three kilometre walk across the grassy cliff tops to the Stacks of Duncansby, two stunning sea-stacks with dramatic cliffs as their backdrop.
Often tourist attractions announce themselves to the world, “look at me” they proclaim in a grandiose way. Seldom will they live up to the hype and often what is fashionable in one era soon finds itself out of favour in another. Much has changed over the years but one understated gem of an attraction in the North East of Scotland still retains a sense of timelessness.
