Move over Route 66! There’s a new contender for getting your road trip kicks. The just-launched North Coast 500 is a route designed to showcase the best of the Scottish Highlands. Developed by the North Highland Initiative, it covers over 500 miles of stunning coastal and mountain scenery.

As Hamish Macbeth meandered through the Scottish Highlands he approached the most inspiring road zig zagging up to a high mountain pass. At the bottom there was a warning sign which said Narrow road - no more than three sheep abreast. The sign is of course fake but the road, Beallach Na Ba in Applecross is very real.

Roads tell stories and the paths, tracks and highways of the highlands are no exception. The history of our country can be told by the seemingly innocuous routes that scramble through our mountains or even the motorways we drive on every day. These are a few of our favourites, stories of anti-government rebellions, of cattle thieves, social control, economic independence, oppression and ultimately freedom.
