We love traditional Scottish cooking here at TrueHighlands, but for a change this week we thought we would share something a bit more contemporary. Don’t panic, we are not about to start pulling pork or frying pizzas just yet. What we do have for you is a 19th century Scottish variation on the breakfast of the British Empire.
The lunch menu at Sutor Creek features a selection of locally sourced meats, vegetables and fish in addition to wood-fired pizzas. One of the most popular lunch dishes is the Smoked Haddock Fishcake served with a mustard sauce and seasonal vegetables. Fishcakes are a great family supper (kids love getting involved with the egging and breading part!) or make a smaller portion to serve as a starter for a dinner party.
Maybe it’s a sign of getting old when you start reliving the experiences from your youth. The modern world has its attractions yes, but when they never live up to the memories that exist in your head since childhood then is it time to re-examine them or simply move on? I had an experience like this last year, a fondly remembered treat from my early years which I had dismissed as parochial and unhealthy in my 20s reappeared in middle age. Could it ever be as sweet as I remember?
